This map is showing value of residuals from a regression analysis with two variables:
1. % of voters voting "NO" for Initiatives 976 (dependent variable)
2. % of voters voting "Approve" for Referendum #88 in the general election 2019. (explanatory variable)
In most case, voter who votes "NO" for Initiatives 976 would also expectedly vote "Approve" for Referendum #88, under general "Progressive" value system, which is prevalent in Washington state.
However, sometimes, there are precinct showing diverging sentiment on this kind of pair of seemingly similar voting races. That is where this regression model underpredicts, leaving residual with higher value.
Now, YOU can look for a precinct with high residual and leave a comment (on your right), about what factor you think makes this conflict happen. That could be race, education, income level, and whatever.
You can search through the precincts in 3 ways:
1. Just look at the map and drag around it.
2. Examine residual graph on the left and click the bubble of your interest, and you will be led to corresponding precinct.
3. Using an address search bar on top left, you can search an address of the location of your interest, and then you will see the precinct that encompasses your location.
Once you find an precinct of your interest, you click it, and then check out if somebody else already left comments there. Regardless, once you click the precinct, put your name and comment into the form on the right, then hit the submit button. Your comment will show up in the popup box of the precinct. That is it!
